The Draft

Making Headlines

NHL: After hosting two games on a golf course in picturesque Lake Tahoe over the weekend, the NHL has now played 32 outdoor games: 19 in football venues, 10 in baseball parks, two on a golf course and one in a soccer stadium. In other news: Rangers star Artemi Panarin has taken a leave of absence from the team following assault allegations.

NBA: The Timberwolves fired head coach Ryan Saunders on Sunday after their NBA-worst 24th loss in 31 games. They hired Raptors assistant Chris Finch to replace him.

Soccer: U.S. men’s national team winger Jordan Morris will miss the rest of the season due to an ACL injury he suffered while playing for Swansea City.

Tonight’s Action

Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes

Watch: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN+

Odds: Lightning -122, Hurricanes +110 || O/U 6

Pick: Two of the Central Division’s top teams face off when the first-place Hurricanes host the defending Stanley Cup champion Lightning. Carolina’s high-octane offense (3.69 goals per game) will face a stingy Lightning defense and goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy (.930 save percentage). Carolina can set a franchise record for longest home point streak to start a season  (8 games). We say they do it. And take the under.

Who ya got? Reply to this newsletter with your prediction of the Lightning-Hurricanes winner, final score and first goal-scorer. Nail it and you get a mention in the next edition of Sports Section. Don’t forget to include your Twitter handle.

Shoutout: In our last edition, we asked subscribers to predict the winner, score and leading scorer of Friday’s Jazz-Clippers game. The Clippers won 116-112 and Donovan Mitchell of the Jazz dropped 35.

No subscriber had the Clippers winning (neither did we though we nailed the over), but David Nagelberg (@SportsGuruDave) did correctly predict Mitchell would have the most points.

Keep the picks coming!
