NCAAF: Miami has parted ways with Manny Diaz and will announce Oregon’s Mario Cristobal as its next head football coach; the deal is reportedly for 10 years and $8 million per year. 

NHL: The Flyers fired head coach Alain Vigneault after a 7-1 loss, their sixth straight. Mike Yeo was named interim coach. Also: Golden Knights goaltender Robin Lehner became the first NHL player to opt out of the 2022 Winter Olympics.

NCAAM: Purdue is No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the first time in school history. Baylor is No. 2 followed by Duke, UCLA, and Gonzaga.

MLB: Buck O’Neil, Gil Hodges, Minnie Miñoso, Tony Oliva, Jim Kaat, and Bud Fowler were elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2022.

Horse racing: Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit died from a heart attack suffered after a workout.
