The Draft

Making Headlines

Australian Open: Serena Williams, in search of her 24th major title, and No. 3 Naomi Osaka started the tournament with dominant first rounds. On the men’s side, top-seeded Novak Djokovic kicked off his title defense in straight sets, while hometown favorite Nick Kyrgios and No. 6 Alexander Zverev also advanced.

NHL: The league admitted it bungled a call on a controversial goal during the Blue Jackets’ 6-5 loss to the Hurricanes, The Athletic reported.

NBA: The Pistons traded Derrick Rose to the Knicks for Dennis Smith Jr. and a 2021 second-round pick. The deal reunites the former No. 1 pick and MVP with coach Tom Thibodeau.

NCAAB: Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky and UCLA are all out of the Top 25 for the first time since December 1961.

Monday’s Action

New York Islanders at New York Rangers

Watch: 7 p.m. ET, NBCSN

Odds: Rangers -114, Islanders -102 || O/U 5.5

Pick: The Battle of New York continues when the Islanders and Rangers face off at Madison Square Garden. In the first two of eight meetings this season, the teams traded shutouts. We like the Rangers to win by at least two in a game that goes over the total.

Who ya got? Reply to this newsletter with your prediction of the Islanders-Rangers winner, final score and scorer of the first goal. Nail it and you get a mention in the next edition of Sports Section. Don’t forget to include your Twitter handle.

Shoutout: On Friday, we asked subscribers to predict the Super Bowl winner and score, as well as the first touchdown scorer and MVP.

Scott Cooley (@ByScottCooley) fared much better than Sports Section (an accomplishment on its own), predicting the Bucs to win 34-31 and correctly selecting Rob Gronkowksi to score the first TD and Tom Brady to win MVP. Well done, Scott! Hope you actually bet these!

Keep the picks coming!
