NHL: The Hurricanes signed Andrei Svechnikov to an eight-year, $62 million deal with an AAV of $7.75 million. The 21-year-old scored 15 goals with 27 assists in 55 games last season. Also, the Flyers signed center Sean Couturier to an eight-year, $62 million deal.

MLB: The Dodgers outlasted the Padres 5-3 in 16 innings — the longest game since the new extra-innings rule began in 2020.

Tokyo Paralympic Games: China leads the medal count with 23 (8 gold, 5 silver, 10 bronze), followed by Great Britain’s 17 (6, 8, 3) and RPC’s 17 (6, 5, 6). The U.S. is seventh with two golds and two silvers.
