Soccer: Cristiano Ronaldo became the men’s all-time leading goalscorer in international soccer (111) after scoring twice in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Ireland in a World Cup qualifier. Ronaldo is set to make his Manchester United debut on Sept. 11 against Newcastle United.

MLB: Gerrit Cole struck out 15 — one shy of his career high — to lead the Yankees over the Angels 4-1 and snap their four-game losing skid.

U.S. Open: Second-seeded Daniil Medvedev, (3) Stefanos Tsitsipas, and (5) Andrey Rublev each advanced to the third round. In the women’s draw, (2) Aryna Sabalenka, (3) Naomi Osaka, and (5) Elina Svitolina advanced. 

Tokyo Paralympic Games: China leads the medal count with 167 (77 gold, 46 silver, 44 bronze), followed by RPC’s 97 (32, 23, 42), and Great Britain’s 96 (34, 27, 35). The U.S. is fifth with 27 gold, 31 silver, and 22 bronze.
